Macha says hard feelings toward Angels won't linger

A day after the A's were involved in a bench-clearing incident in Anaheim, Manager Ken Macha tried to extinguish any lingering ill will between his team and the Los Angeles Angels.
``Sometimes things happen,'' Macha said before Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Indians. ``I know one thing, I respect the Angels. They play very hard. We've had very intense games against them, the last two years in particular. It's very entertaining for fans. I hope they respect us and the way we play the game.''
Trouble began when Oakland's Jason Kendall charged the mound in the sixth inning Tuesday after Angels right-hander John Lackey barked at him for leaning over the plate. Both teams spilled onto the field, and Kendall and Lackey were ejected.
Angels Manager Mike Scioscia was upset after A's reliever Chad Gaudin plunked Robb Quinlan with a pitch in the ninth with Oakland leading 10-3, saying the A's were ``trying to send a message.''
The A's Mark Ellis had been hit by a pitch from J.C. Romero in the top of the ninth.
``We're not trying to hit anybody,'' Macha said. ``We've got an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the last inning. We're trying to finish the game and get out of there.''
Kendall said he had yet to hear from Major League Baseball regarding a suspension. He was in the lineup Wednesday and got a hearty ovation from the home crowd as he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat.
Ellis said he doesn't believe more fireworks will be in store when the teams meet in Oakland on July 6-9.
``Time heals a lot of things,'' he said. ``It's always an intense rivalry. It's hard to get more intense than it already is.''
